Massachusetts Annual Vehicle Inspection Laws

Massachusetts drivers must have their vehicles inspected annually to fulfill state law requirements. Some vehicles must also undergo emissions testing to remain in good standing as well. Drivers cannot renew their registration until this step is complete. If you did not pass your inspection or have run into other issues regarding vehicle inspections, The Cashman Law Firm can help you and provide clarity on your options so you can resolve the situation.

Inspection Requirements in Massachusetts

All licensed drivers throughout the state must have their vehicles checked annually by a certified inspector. The purpose of these inspections is to ensure vehicle safety for all drivers throughout the state. Vehicles that pass inspection are issued a sticker for their windshield to show that their vehicle has passed and met the inspection requirements. Vehicles that do not pass an inspection have a limited time to remedy the issue in question.

What’s included in an Annual Inspection and Testing

During an inspection, your vehicle will undergo a thorough review to ensure it is in safe and working condition. A vehicle inspection often begins with a visual evaluation to make sure the vehicle’s registration, license plate, and VIN are all current and in order. Next, various key systems on the vehicle are checked. This includes the brakes, exhaust, steering and suspension, the horn, windows and windshield wipers, mirrors, lighting systems, tires and wheels, fenders and bumpers, fuel systems, seat belts, and airbags.

Additionally, certain vehicles must undergo emissions tests. Passenger vehicles from 2011 to the present must undergo an On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) test to make sure all emission systems are working properly. Light and medium diesel vehicles up to 14,000 pounds and newer than 2011 must also be tested. Diesel vehicles weighing 10,000 pounds or more must receive an opacity test instead of an OBD. Older vehicles are often exempt from emissions testing.

Steps to Take if You Do Not Pass Your Inspection or Emissions Testing

If your vehicle does not pass inspection, you have 60 days to resolve the issue and receive a free re-inspection. Any additional re-inspections must be paid for by the driver. You will receive a sticker that reflects the issue with your inspection. If you receive a red R sticker, it means your vehicle failed both the inspection and emissions test. A black R sticker means that the emissions test was the only part that did not pass. Vehicles with red stickers may not be driven until they are repaired, with the exception of getting to and from a mechanic. Failing to bring a vehicle into compliance could result in a suspended registration by the Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV).
